El Calafate is a small town in western Patagonia. It is located not far from the border with Chile directly at Lago Argentina and has an airport.
The city is the starting point to visit the amazing Perito Moreno Glacier. Boat trips and glacier hikes are also possible at / on the Perito Moreno.
You can travel from El Calafate to Chile to Puerto Natales or directly to Torre del Paine National Park. Day trips to Torre del Paine are also possible from here.
In Argentina, the hiking paradise El Chalten with the famous Mount Fitz Roy is only a 3 hours drive away. You can go there for a day tour or you stay directly a few days to hike.
In El Calafate itself you can watch birds such as flamingos at the Argentina lake, or go kayaking. The city is very touristic with many hotels, restaurants and souvenir shops.
